*Journalism Workshop Planned for Newark High Schoolers
Newark, N.J. -- The Garden State Association of Black Journalists today announced a unique opportunity for Newark high school students to immerse themselves in the fast-paced world of journalism through an intensive workshop the media organization plans for New Jersey’s largest city.
The GSABJ Journalism Workshop will feature a hands-on approach to news writing,
photography, layout and design. The first class of 10 participants is expected
to find and report news for a workshop publication.
The program will pair 9th- and 10th-grade students with veteran reporters, editors and producers at news organizations like the Associated Press, New Jersey Network Public Television & Radio, The Star-Ledger and Asbury Park Press.
"The Garden State Association of Black Journalists has discussed starting a program like this for quite a while," said Sherlon Christie, president of the GSABJ, a chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, the nation’s largest organization of journalists of color. "With the help of the Newark Board of Education, this dream will finally happen.''
The free workshop sessions will be held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. Ten students will be selected to participate in the Saturday program which begins April 14 and runs through June 2, 2007.
The workshop is a joint effort between the GSABJ, Newark Public Schools, NJIT and the Consortium for Pre-College Education in Greater Newark.
"The launch of the student journalism workshop also fulfills part of the Garden State Association of Black Journalists' mission, which is 'to serve as role models and mentors for students interested in media-related careers,' " Christie added. "Once again, we are excited about working with the Newark Board of Education and we're looking forward to great results.''
